1.        TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION FOR THE CLASSROOM

The class will learn how to integrate technology in the classroom.  The focus will be students utilizing the technology with teachers modeling.  The following technology will be explored: smart boards, palm pilots, slide shows, web quests, inspiration, spreadsheets, and interactive web sites.  Each class member will develop at least one lesson plan or project incorporating technology in their classroom.  Additional time outside of class will be spent on developing the project(s) or lesson(s).  Mrs. Ebert may introduce grading on-line as well during the class.

2        THE UPPER DELAWARE PART 1: An Educational Experience

The Delaware River region provides many opportunities to bring local history, geography, science, reading and language arts to our classrooms.  This course will focus on these subjects and more, as we investigate the Upper Delaware River.  The experience will be hands-on, so be prepared to take part in water quality experiments and guided tours along the river.  The first day at Damascus School will shape the foundation for the remainder of the course by focusing on educational resources in the form of lesson plans, video, internet, and print media.  An itinerary for the remainder of the course will be handed out on the first day.   We will be going to historical sites from Lackawaxen, PA to Cochecton, NY.  The tour will include the Roebling Aqueduct, Zane Grey Museum, Battle of the Minisink historical site, historic Milanville, and Fort Delaware.  Teachers will keep notebooks and folders for material to be used in the classroom.

 

NOTE: Exact tour locations may change as times and places are arranged later in the spring.  Fees for museum entrance will be paid by the student.

3.         THE UPPER DELAWARE PART II:  AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

The Upper Delaware experience continues with part two.  The class will explore the far reaches of the Delaware River by visiting Equinunk, PA and areas north of Damascus, along with areas to the far south near Milford, PA.  Historic sites on this tour may include the Equinunk Historical Society, Damascus Historical Society, Wayne County Historical Society and the home of Governor Gifford Pinchot, Grey Towers.  Special emphasis will be on the Delaware and Hudson Canal and the rafting industry on the Delaware River in the 1800âs.  Teachers should plan for more hand-on activities and educational resources to use in the classroom.

 

NOTE:   Fees for museum entrance will be paid by the student.

4.         THE UPPER DELAWARE PART II1: An Educational Experience

LOCATION:                             Damascus School & other points along the Delaware River, northeast PA and western New York State

MAX. CLASS SIZE:                   20

 

            The Upper Delaware Experience continues with part three.  The class will highlight how the coal was mined in northeast PA, traveled the Gravity Railroad and Delaware and Hudson Canal to the Hudson River.  After a day of introduction and lessons at Damascus School, the class will travel to the Anthracite Coal Mine in Scranton, PA where the coal was mined and to High Falls, New York near Kingston and the end of the Delaware and Hudson Canal to visit the D & H Canal Museum and Historical Society.  The Canal Museum in High Falls has an extensive library of materials and lesson plans developed for schools in New York State.  There will be plenty of ideas for us to borrow for our end of the canal.  There will be a lesson on invasive plants along the Delaware River.

5.         PHOTOGRAPHY FOR YOUR CLASSROOM-PART II

            Photography II is an extension of Part I.  Part II cannot be taken without first taking Part I. Digital photography will again be explored with projects such as a slide show or collages.  Also, using the digital camera, students can make short quick time movie clips.  Black and white photography will also be an option with more emphasis on using camera for more creative and artistic pictures.

            Participants must complete a project, presentation and/or lesson plan showing how the skills learned will be applied to instruction in their teaching assignment.

Photography III is combining the information learned in Parts I & II to develop an in-depth study for the classroom.

              Teachers can use learned techniques in the darkroom or on the computer to develop a lesson or unit for their classroom.  This would be presented at the end of the class.

            Another option would be to develop an extensive photo library categorized in appropriate files for use in your classroom.  Field trips are also being planned.

Participants must complete a project, presentation and/or lesson plan showing how the skills learned will be applied to instruction in their teaching assignments.

            Diversity is a hot topic.  Often itâs thought of as black and white although there are many other facets to it which we find in Wayne County.  Our goal is to examine the issues we face and address how we can create a more accepting community in our school setting.

            Participants will develop and share reference materials for use in classrooms and mentor groups which would help raise awareness and provide skills for acceptance and non-violence.

8.          THE PORTABLE MACINTOSH AND YOUR CLASSROOM

                                                            computer running OS 10.4 (Tiger).  Portables

                                                            could include MacBook Pro/MacBook.  Portables

                                                            should also be equipped with the built in iSight

                                                            digital video camera or equivalent.  A valid AOL

                                                            instant messenger account is also required (contact facilitator for assistance).

 

            Participants will increase their classroom productivity and knowledge base of the Macintosh operating system by completing in whole class and individual activities using computer applications bundled with their portable Macintosh to include:

 

á         Utilizing the Mac OS via the FINDER (connecting to WHSD servers/iDisks)

á         Mail (setting up user accounts, filters/rules, contacts via the Address book and attachments

á         System preferences (customizing your Mac to suit your needs and personality

á         Safari ö Surfing the internet with one of the fastest internet web browsers, organizing bookmarks in your bookmarks bar, menu and folders

á         iPhoto-managing your digital photos, organizing albums, reducing ãred eyeä, cropping, enhancing, e-mailing photos, posting photos to the web (all from one interface.  Instructor will provide digital cameras.

á         iChatAV-video teleconferencing activities with your colleagues, family and friends

á         iMovie/iDVD-creating and sharing digital content with students, family and friends (digital video camera is optional, but access to one would be beneficial).
