Introduction
Poetry
is one of the most expressive forms of writing.
It evokes all types of emotions from joy to sadness, to laughter and
love. You’ve probably heard of Shel
Silverstein and have read many of his light-hearted, wacky poems. Or maybe
you’ve read William Shakespeare’s work, many of which have been written in
ballads. From funny limericks to haikus that reflect on nature and feelings,
the possibilities are endless. Your
mission is to explore the lives of several poets and create your own piece of
poetry.
Task
With
a partner, you will explore various websites to learn about the lives of
several diverse poets. You will also
view a variety of different types of poems including acrostic, limerick,
ballad, cinquain, etc. Your task is to
write two different types of poems that you feel most comfortable with. You can view the poetry website to choose
which form of poetry you would like to write.
Process
First
begin by viewing each of the five highlighted poets and an example of one of
their poems. Please be sure to look
closely at the style of the poem, including the length, rhythm, rhyme, visual
appearance, and content. Each are unique and set a different tone. Also keep in mind that you will be writing
two different forms of poetry. Begin
thinking which kind you like best and the form that will be easiest for you.
